I can’t even begin to explain how incredible this place is. Every time we visit I just fall in love with it even more. Its awe inspiring building and a different exciting view around every corner, it’s the place of dreams!
Here’s our collection of travel images from this Venice trip. I have included recommendations of our favourite places to eat and drink, where to stay and must see hidden gems. We love to feel the culture when we travel, over the typical tourist vibe, so if your looking to live like a local for a few days head to a few of these spots.
Where to eat & drink
One thing we always do before travelling anywhere is research where to eat. A lot of our travel is around food. We don’t like wasting money on crappy food, and we are always on the hunt for the places the locals eat.
Dal Moro’s is the place! Pasta in a box to go. It’s cheap, about 7/8€, and it’s insane. We ate there both days.
Our favourite cafe, 1882. With outdoor seating right on the canal it’s just breathtaking. It’s not on the main bit of the canal so it’s quiet, more local clientele and cheaper. Omg the hot chocolates there are incredible!
Where to stay
This trip we stayed in a different airbnb. It was located right next to San Marco. We’ve not stayed in that area before and really enjoyed being so central. The loft’s decor was right up my street, 70s style and we had the view of the tower. It was perfect!
What to see
The bridge without the parapet. The last remaining bridge in Venice that has no parapet, doesn't actually lead anywhere but it's cool to see (and obvs take a pic of)!
The bridge of sighs. Given its name as it was said that the convicted Venetian prisoner would let out a sigh as they took their final view of Venice from the bridge before being taken down to the cells. I'm not surprised, the view is stunning.
Saint Mark's Basilica. This one is a touristy thing to do but worth it if you have time and the queues not to big. We weren’t actually going to go in because the queue was so long the first day but the second day we walked past and there was no queue so we went in and it is a site to see!
Fondaco Dei Tedeschi rooftop. This is the terrace of the shopping centre and it’s free to go up, you just need to book a slot online. Panoramic view over the main canal. We went up in the evening and the view of the city in the dark was something else.
Libreria Acque Alta. We hunted out this book store and when we got there we realised we had actually been there on our first trip to Venice. In the back there’s a little garden with a stair case built out of books that you can climb to look over at the canal. I saw it sold as an ‘instagramable’ spot but truthfully it’s just a pile of wet books but it’s still cool to see.
Palazzo Contarini de Bovolo. One of the most stunning buildings we saw in Venice. With the city being mainly flat its hard to get a view from high up so it's worth a climb to the top of the staircase to get a view of those red flag roofs. It costs £8 and there is a small art gallery on the second floor.
Those are a few of our favourite spots of the trip but in truth my favourite thing to do in Venice is just to walk the streets and be in shock and awe every time you turn a corner. Every street has something new to offer, so just go and explore. Here's the rest of our travel images.
